The Multi-Faceted Safari on Arusha's Doorstep

Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania's most geographically diverse and visually stunning secrets. Within a single afternoon you can transition from a lush montane forest filled with inquisitive monkeys, to the sparkling, multicoloured Momella Lakes, and onward to the dramatic volcanic cliffs of Mount Meru — Africa's fifth-highest peak at 4,562 metres.

It is a jewel of a park that trades the classic dry savannah for a dramatic emerald-green jungle wilderness, offering a serene and exclusive safari environment without the crowds. And uniquely, it sits just 25 kilometres from Arusha city centre — making it the perfect warm-up, transit day, or active adventure before the wider Northern Circuit begins.

"Arusha National Park doesn't shout. It whispers — in colobus monkey calls, in the reflected colours of seven alkaline lakes, and in the silhouette of Kilimanjaro on the horizon."

Where is Arusha National Park Located?

Arusha National Park is the most accessible park in northern Tanzania — located just 25 kilometres (15 miles) northeast of Arusha city centre and roughly 35 kilometres from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). No charter flights, no long drives.

Because it sits literally on the doorstep of the region's main travel hubs, it is the absolute best destination for a quick transit day safari, an active warm-up before the broader Northern Circuit, or the mandatory launching pad for Mount Meru climbing expeditions.

The Seasons of Meru & the Lakes

Wildlife is stable year-round thanks to permanent mountain water sources. What changes with the seasons are Kilimanjaro views, trekking conditions, migratory birds, and the mood of the forest itself.

Dry Season — Arusha National Park
June – October

Clear Mountain Peaks — Best for Trekking

The absolute best time for clear skies and trekking Mount Meru. Morning mist clears quickly, revealing jaw-dropping, unobstructed views of Mount Kilimanjaro hanging on the eastern horizon. The bush is less dense, making it much easier to track wildlife through the forest glades.

  • Best clear-sky views of Kilimanjaro from the summit
  • Optimal trekking conditions for Mount Meru
  • Less dense bush — easier wildlife tracking
  • Peak season — most active and popular time to visit
Short Rains — Arusha National Park
November – December

The Emerald Rebirth

Short, refreshing afternoon showers transform the park into a vibrant emerald paradise. Orchid and wildflower blooms peak along the crater slopes. Tourist numbers drop significantly, offering an incredibly tranquil, exclusive atmosphere at very competitive rates.

  • Orchids and wildflowers bloom along crater slopes
  • Park turns lush vibrant green
  • Significantly fewer tourists — peaceful & exclusive
  • Excellent value shoulder season pricing
Birding Peak — Arusha National Park
January – March

The Birding Peak — Momella Lakes

The weather is warm and beautifully clear. This is the optimal window for exploring the Momella Lakes, as thousands of migratory birds from Europe arrive, joining resident flamingos to create a chaotic, colourful spectacle across the seven different-coloured lake surfaces.

  • Peak migratory bird arrival from Europe
  • Flamingos join resident species on Momella Lakes
  • 400+ bird species at their most accessible
  • Warm, clear weather — ideal for canoe safaris
Long Rains — Arusha National Park
April – May

The Mystic Cloud Forest

The park receives heavy rain, turning the montane forests into a moody, atmospheric wonderland of moss-covered trees and cascading waterfalls. Trekking trails become slick, but it is a magnificent time for lowland forest walks in complete, uninterrupted solitude.

  • Moss-covered trees & cascading waterfalls
  • Atmospheric cloud forest — best for photography
  • Absolute solitude — minimal visitors
  • Lowest prices — exceptional budget value

Top Things to Do in Arusha NP

Walking Safari — Arusha National Park 🦒
Arusha National Park, Tanzania

Guided Walking Safaris

Tanzania's premier destination for walking safaris. Because the park lacks rhinos and lions are rare, you can walk right alongside herds of buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes on the stunning "Little Serengeti" plains — accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger.

Canoeing on Momella Lakes 🚣
Momella Lakes, Arusha National Park, Tanzania

Canoeing on the Momella Lakes

Paddle a stable canoe across the tranquil, alkaline waters of the seven Momella Lakes. Glide past pods of hippos, waterbucks, and flocks of pink flamingos — with Mount Meru as a dramatic backdrop and Kilimanjaro on the horizon.

Colobus Monkeys & Ngurdoto Crater 🐒
Arusha National Park, Tanzania

Colobus Monkeys & Ngurdoto Crater

The park's dense montane canopy is Tanzania's best spot for the striking black-and-white colobus monkey. Combine it with a drive along the rim of Ngurdoto Crater — a "Mini-Ngorongoro" — to peer down at buffalo herds wallowing far below.

What Our Arusha Guests Say

★★★★★ 4.9 / 5 from verified reviews

"

"The canoe safari on the Momella Lakes was one of the most peaceful moments of my entire trip. Paddling toward flamingos with Meru above us and Kilimanjaro on the horizon — I have never felt closer to Africa."

"

SECTION 08

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You will see an abundance of Buffaloes, Elephants, and occasional Leopards in the mountain forests. However, there are no Rhinos, and Lions are virtually non-existent here. If completing the traditional Big Five is your main objective, pair this park with visits to Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.
Absolutely! Because it is so close to town, you lose zero travel time. It is highly recommended for travellers who have a spare day before their main safari, or those who want an active day of walking and canoeing after a long international flight — you can be here within 90 minutes of landing at JRO.
The Momella Lakes are a collection of seven shallow, alkaline lakes fed by underground streams. Each lake has a slightly different mineral composition and varying types of algae growing inside it, causing them to reflect distinct shades of blue, green, and copper-bronze. It is one of Tanzania's most unique natural spectacles.
Yes, it is highly secure. You are legally required to be accompanied by a professional, armed TANAPA park ranger who is deeply trained in animal behaviour. They ensure a safe, respectful distance is kept from animals like buffaloes and elephants at all times.
For standard game drives, canoeing, and basic forest walks, anyone with standard mobility will thoroughly enjoy the park. However, if you intend to summit Mount Meru, you will need excellent physical condition — the steep, high-altitude volcanic scree slope at 4,562m is seriously demanding.
