Ernest Hemingway famously described Lake Manyara as "the loveliest I had seen in Africa," and it is easy to see why. Nestled dramatically at the base of the sheer, 600-metre Great Rift Valley escarpment, this compact park packs an unbelievable amount of ecological diversity into a small space.
Nearly two-thirds of the park is covered by the shimmering alkaline waters of the lake itself, while the remaining land holds a tapestry of habitats — from dense jungle-like groundwater forest, through open acacia woodlands, to wide salty floodplains. From its legendary tree-climbing lions to its chaotic baboon troops, Manyara offers a lush dramatic contrast to the wide-open savannahs of the Serengeti.
"Lake Manyara is not just a park — it is a curtain-raiser. It sets the stage for everything wild and extraordinary that Tanzania is about to show you."

Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania
Lake Manyara is located in northern Tanzania, roughly 125 kilometres (78 miles) west of Arusha — a comfortable 2–2.5 hour drive on fully paved roads. It sits nestled at the foothills of the highland gateway town of Karatu.
Because it sits directly on the main safari highway connecting Tarangire National Park to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, it acts as the perfect geographical stepping stone — an ideal introductory stop or a relaxing half-day addition to any Northern Circuit road trip.
Wildlife viewing is excellent year-round thanks to the permanent underground water supply. But the appearance of Lake Manyara changes dramatically with the rains — from pink flamingo spectacles to big mammal gatherings.
The best time for scenic beauty, dramatic photography, and birdwatching. Rainwater fills the lake basin, drawing hundreds of thousands of migratory lesser flamingos that tint the shoreline a brilliant pink. Water levels rise high enough to permit specialised boat safaris, and the groundwater forest becomes an intensely lush vibrant green jungle.
The alkaline lake recedes significantly, leaving behind wide grassy floodplains. Animals — including large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and wildebeest — migrate out of the drying surrounding steppe and congregate predictably along the remaining fresh-water rivers. The bush thins out, making large predators much easier to spot.
Stroll through the canopy on one of the longest skywalks in Africa — suspended 18 metres above the ground via suspension bridges. A thrilling monkey's-eye view of the ancient groundwater forest filled with hornbills and butterflies.
While lions occasionally climb trees elsewhere, Manyara's prides are globally famous for draping themselves over low-slung acacia branches to escape the ground heat. Spotting them overhead is one of Africa's most unusual wildlife sights.
Paddle a canoe past hippo pods and pelicans during high water season. Or rent a mountain bike in Mto wa Mbu — a vibrant cultural melting pot of 120 tribes — to ride through red-banana plantations and visit local woodcarving workshops.
Lake Manyara sits right on the main safari highway — one of the easiest parks in Tanzania to reach from Arusha.
Travel on a smooth, fully paved tarmac highway westward from Arusha, through rolling Maasai plains and past vibrant curio markets, right to the bustling gateway town of Mto wa Mbu. An exceptionally easy and cost-effective drive.
Board a brief charter flight from Arusha Airport (ARK) to Lake Manyara Airstrip (MYA) at the top of the escarpment rim. Your lodge vehicle will collect you for a quick 15-minute transfer down to the park gates.
Choose between staying inside the park (ultra-exclusive jungle immersion), on the Rift Valley Escarpment rim (jaw-dropping aerial views), or in Mto wa Mbu (cultural access & budget value).
Best for early morning wildlife access, absolute seclusion, and luxury jungle immersion deep in the mahogany forest.
Best for panoramic, bucket-list aerial views looking across the entire lake basin and valley floor from the top of the 600m escarpment wall.
Just outside the park gates — ideal for cultural activities, budget-friendly rates, warmer nights, and quick highway connections onward.
